He's happiest at home with me

I often feel guilty that George's world is pretty small.

We don't go to many different places and we spend quite a lot of time at home.

I see this sentiment often on reactive and fearful dog support groups. People are worried that their dog doesn't get to socialise with other dogs or do 'normal' dog things like going to dog parks.

The advice is helpful and I try to take it on board.

Not all dogs are sociable. In fact, only a small number are. Most are selectively sociable, and some are not sociable at all.

Anxious and fear-reactive dogs (excitement-reactive is different!) tend to fall into the not sociable category for obvious reasons.

Dog parks are generally not a great idea, even for non-reactive dogs.

I don't worry about George's socialisation with other dogs due to daycare. Ideally, his temperament would suit less daycare time but we don't really have a choice. He does well there but needs some extra downtime.

For anxious dogs, going to lots of different places can be very scary. I made this mistake. George does better in a few familiar places.

I felt guilty recently that George didn't get to go on a forest adventure with daycare because I wasn't well. The daycare staff member said not to worry: "He's happiest at home with you!".

That made me realise he actually really is! He's doing so well with calm at home now and it is his safe space.

Whilst it is not what I envisaged when getting a dog, for George, the world being small is a very good thing!
