What I would have done differently

This is what I have learned throughout our journey so far. I fully appreciate that every dog and situation is different. This is just our story and what has worked for me and George.

Nervous dog wearing I Need Space lead stands cautiously at an open doorway

These are the key things I would have done differently:

  • Gone slower - slow, slow and more slow. When George was reluctant to go for walks or leave the house, we should have gone home and taken it more slowly the next time. New things should have been introduced way more slowly.

  • Recognised reactivity earlier. Rather than continuing to expose George to triggers, if I'd recognised the reactivity earlier, I could have reduced his stress and prevented him from rehearsing the behaviour.

  • Researched trainers better. One trainer (who came recommended) advised me to let him cry it out in the crate to deal with separation anxiety and I'm ashamed to say I believed this advice. We are now working through Julie Naismith's protocol.

  • Considered meds earlier. At least know your options. Don't wait until you're at the end of your tether to research this step. Meds have been an absolute game-changer for George. My reluctance prolonged his stress unnecessarily.

  • Picked my battles. Focus on one thing at a time. Choose the thing that is going to have the most benefit to both of your lifestyles and wellbeing.

  • Pared my expectations right back. Love the dog you have not the one you expected to have.
