Medication: current state

George is currently taking Fluoxetine and Clonidine in the mornings, and Clonidine in the evenings. We are using Trazodone situationally.

All help in different ways. I am very happy with the Fluoxetine (for overall anxiety) and the Clonidine (for noise sensitivity and calmness in the car). I'm reluctant to make any changes to these given the improvements.

I am still not sure about the Trazodone. It has more of a sedentary effect. It was amazing for my parents' visit when George's routine was turned upside down. But now that I'm using it on a more normal basis I'm not sure.

Although sedentary, George actually seems to be more restless and more jumpy and skittish on Trazodone days. He seems more alert. I don't think I noticed this during my parents' visit as we were often doing things.

I would stop it but it is so helpful on walks if we encounter triggers. He can tolerate triggers at a distance which he can't do without it. If he does react, they are less intense and he recovers more quickly.

But it does seem harsh for him to be restless and jumpy for hours for the sake of what might be a 20-30 minute walk (if we're lucky with triggers).

It is also helpful for grooming visits and I suspect will be helpful for vet visits (thankfully we haven't needed to test the latter yet).

I can play around with the dosage a little although half didn't seem to have the same benefits.

I'm continuing to closely monitor and will speak to my VB about my concerns.

We are now 7 months into our medication journey and still haven't got it quite right…but I am hopeful that we are nearly there.
